  • It's HOT outside - don't overheat your garage door opener posted 2011-07-19 06:25

With the excessive heat in the Chicago area it is important to not run your garage door opener excessively. Residential garage door openers are not designed to be used multiple times consecutively without overheating. In order to meet UL safety requirements your garage door opener (mfg after 1980) should contain an automatic thermal overload in the motor. If the motor is run too many times in a short period of time the thermal overload cuts in and turns off the power to the motor.

  • Massive power outage in Chicago Area - How do I use my garage door? posted 2011-06-22 08:13

A massive power outage has hit the Chicago and suburban areas due to the storms last night. We are already getting the panic calls from those who cannot figure out how to get out of their garage. All garage door openers sold in the U.S. since the 1970's MUST have a manual release by UL requirement. This is usually a red string (a chain on some old units) located near the connection of the garage door opener arm to the garage door. In openers made after 1982 you simply pull down on the release sting and lift the door manually.

  • Ultra grain Walnut now available posted 2011-06-09 06:43
Clopay has started shipping the latest color in the Ultra Grain line - Walnut. This is in addition to medium oak and dark oak. Market testing shows most reviewers preferred the walnut to the dark oak. The ultra grain finish is available on Gallery series doors from Clopay and provides both vertical and horizontal grain patterns to simulate a "real" stained wood door with the insulation and low maintenance of a steel door. In fact we can supply these doors with an insulation value up to r=17.2. We are awaiting literature with the new color but we do have color chip samples.

  • Do you have "rolling code" garage door remotes? posted 2011-03-20 21:18

Many homes have been broken into and burglarized by thieves using universal controls that open the garage door by reading the access code in the opener. Rolling access code technology is one way to protect your home, family and belongings against thieves and intruders. Rolling access code technology changes the code of your automatic opener after every use, so the thieves' universal controls are rendered useless. All new residential garage door systems which we have installed in the Chicago, IL area have been rolling code since 1997.

  • Thank you Skokie Public Works posted 2011-03-11 07:07
It was a month ago when we were all buried in snow. We should all take a moment to thank the workers who got the streets and alleys accessible - in Skokie the Skokie Public Works employees did a great job considering the record snow fall. The alley behind our shop was plowed and salted numerous times by the Village and even some local residents.

  • Have you cleaned your garage door? posted 2011-03-06 05:11

In order to prevent damage (rusting) caused by foreign matter adhering to the garage door, the door should be cleaned at least twice a year (normal environments) or 4 times a year (coastal environments). The garage door may need to be cleaned more frequently if road salt accumulates in a winter climate. The garage door should be wiped down with a mild household detergent and rinsed with clear water.

Note: Be sure to clean behind stop molding on the sides and top of the door.

  • Safety tip: garage door wall control mounted too low? posted 2011-03-01 21:40

Is your garage door wall control panel mounted five feet above the floor?

SAFETY TIP: Children playing with the garage door wall control panels of your automatic garage door opener can lead to accidents that might cause either personal injury or property damage. We recommend that you educate your child about the potential dangers of playing with the wall control panel. As an added safety measure, we recommend mounting your garage door wall control panel at least five feet above the floor, out of the reach of young children.

Are there any frayed or worn strips hanging loose from the spring system of your garage door?

SAFETY TIP: If the cables that attach from the spring system to the bottom bracket on either side of your garage door have frayed or worn strips hanging loose, your cables are in danger of breaking, which could cause serious injury or property damage. • Clear snow from alley when requesting service posted 2011-02-09 07:37

We all know that there was record snowfall in the Chicago area last week. What is truly amazing are those customers who have an alley garage and request service to their garage door even though there is not a chance of getting a service vehicle down the alley. This is especially true within the city of Chicago but is happening to a lesser extent in the suburbs.  We had a customer with over 3 feet of snow in the alley and wondered why we could not service their door. Please clear the snow before scheduling a service call or installation. Thanks.
