Frequently asked questions

Should I use aftermarket or OEM gears in my garage door opener?

Every year about this time we see a sharp increase in the number of drive gear and sprocket failures in garage door openers. We have customers asking "Can I get just the large plastic gear by itself?" Most of these customers have seen "cheap" aftermarket gears on the internet. Many of these gears are made in Venezuela or other aftermarket sources and include just the large gear and not the drive gear on the motor shaft. These will work for awhile but if put any value on your time you should always change both gears at the same time and be sure to lubricate them well.

Cheap garage doors (1 or 2 layer) - Are they worth it?

For years we have had residential customers request “the cheapest door you’ve got”. The next comment is usually something like -”I am selling the house” or “It only has to last a few years” or “Why would I need insulation - my garage is not heated”.In most cases they are looking for a 1 layer not insulated garage door for a detached, unheated alley or side drive garage. We have seen builders install these same cheap garage doors on an attached garage with living area above the garage door just to cut their costs.

Liftmaster discontinues model 3280 belt drive - new 8355 MyQ is the replacement

Garage Door Co Repair Pros has received an official announcement from Liftmaster (by Chamberlain) that the model 3280 1/2hp belt drive garage door opener has been discontinued. Rumors of this have been circulating for awhile but as seen below it is not official. In a move towards expanding the MyQ product line Liftmaster has replaced the model 3280 with the model 8355 which is a 1/2 hp belt drive with MyQ. The model 3280 was our most popular model since it was quieter than the chain drive (ie model 3255 or 3265) and was priced competitively.

It's spring break for many - secure your garage door

This week many of are customers in the Chicago area are on spring break. If you are going to be out of town and NOT using your garage door you may consider unplugging the motor unit from the outlet on the ceiling in the garage. This will prevent anyone from using the garage door in your absence. You can also use the mechanical slide lock on the inside of your garage door (if equipped) to act as a deadbolt lock. Be sure that you disconnect the power before using the manual lock to prevent damage to the door or garage door opener upon your return if you forget that you locked the door.

Have a "Good Friday" & Easter / Happy Passover - but let's not be too pc

This week many of our customers will celebrate Good Friday & Easter or Passover. While some of our customers may think it is not pc (politically correct) to speak of these days we feel that everyone should be able to accept others holidays. An example of the pc going too far came the other day from Clopay Garage Doors when we received our annual fax advising us that their distribution centers (and corporate offices) would be closed on Friday April 6, 2012 for "Spring Break Day".
