Like many Clopay dealers we were very disappointed years ago when Clopay switched from oil tempered to galvanized torsion springs for residential doors. They would not allow the doors to be ordered with the oil tempered springs even though they were available on a special order basis since the commercial doors were still be offered with the oil tempered springs. Garage Door Co Repair Pros has been supplying all doors and replacement springs as oil tempered for years and was requiring Clopay to remove the galvanized spring cost from every door order.
We have been pushing for the last several years for Clopay to dump the galvanized springs in favor of oil tempered and coated springs like most of the other manufacturers in the industry including Amarr, CHI, Genie, Overhead, Raynor & Wayne-Dalton. Recently we received our first order of the replacement springs and have had the part numbers added to iStore for dealers who purchase electronically (like gdcorp). There appears to be some production delays but we are told that will be resolved very soon.
It should be noted that these coated springs are electronically marked with wire size, hand, length and id but the writing should be a larger font similar to the galvanized product. These springs are not as shiny as some of their competitors but do represent a major improvement over the galvanized springs.
